Director's Notes

We’re all, ultimately, alone in this world.  We rattle around in our own skin, bumping into each other, sometimes hurting, sometimes laughing, and sometimes – connecting.  A spark jumps between us, eyes meet, heart recognizes heart, and the chance is offered for us to be something more than alone.  I grant you, it’s a risk to love someone, to answer that call.  But isn’t it more of a risk not to answer, to turn away and continue on our solitary path, betting that it’s better to be lonely than to be heartbroken?  I believe it’s better to spend years picking up the broken shards of your heart, than wrap yourself in protective armor and walk safely through 80-something years of… well, of what?  What is life worth if we have no one to share its joys, its sorrows and its challenges?  How do you truly enjoy a sunrise if you don’t have anyone to turn to and gasp: “Oh look!  Isn’t it beautiful?  Hey, God, bring dimmer 4 up a little.”  Jokes are good only when heard by someone who gets it.  Life is best with someone who “gets” you.

Frankie and Johnny both bring baggage to this night of potential.  They both have experienced pain, fear and broken hearts.  But they also have experienced enough love to know that it is something to fight for, something to at least give half a chance!  The question before us tonight is:  what do you do when you hear that call?  How do you “grab onto it and hold on for all you’re worth”?  Do you jump on it immediately and start picking out china, or do you tread carefully, slowly… sneak up on it so it won’t turn and bite you too soon?  They say: opportunity only knocks once.  When Love comes knocking at your door… will you answer?  Allow us to play a little Debussy for you and create a space to consider if Love is worth the risk.
